The Princeton Review Writing Smart Junior: The Art and Craft of Writing/Grades 6-8
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (August, 1995)
Authors: C. L. Brantley, Princeton Review, and Cynthia Johnson
Average review score:

Writing Smart Junior
This book is excellent, and not only for middle school children. I've used this book in teaching writing seminars for adults, and the rules still apply. Though the lessons are taught in story format, they are invaluable.

The only educational book that will both teach AND intrigue!
Writing Smart Junior, by C.L. Brantley, is a very beneficial guide to any junior-higher in need of better writing skills. It is very clearly written and easy to follow. The key element is how educational the storyline is. Brantley has written it in such a way so that you are intrigued with what is happening with the characters and what they are experiencing, and at the same time able to comprehend what they are learning. So, in a way, you feel like you are a part of the team trying to accomplish the assigned quest for the lost art of writing. This is an exellent book; an addition to my bookshelf that I am extemely grateful for. It has helped me through some of my most difficult times in my English class. (I originally had a C, but thanks to Writing Smart Junior, I now have an A!)

It was a very good book but I read better.
I like books such asXANT

Sex on Campus: The Naked Truth About the Real Sex Lives of College Students
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (May, 1997)
Authors: Leland Elliott, Cynthia Brantley, and Cynthia Johnson
Average review score:

The Princeton Review does it again!
This is a fantastic book about sex -- it will make you want to have more and more of it. The book is more exciting than "Wordsmart Junior" (another Princeton Review book by Brantley), but it's written for a different audience. It's a thoughtful, intelligent, humor-filled look at sex on campus today, including the down side, like STDs and rape. Should be required reading for everyone who's going to college.

A Great Source
As a college student and lover of non-fiction, I found this book not only enjoyable, but a good bit fascinating. In a time when sexual activity is becoming much more public, this book has many answers that a student may find embarrasing or awkward to ask. Most books based on statistics are dull and used for reference only. "Sex on Campus" was not, putting the reader at ease with its candid language and humor. A great read.

Great Book for all
A tremendous guide for any student or parent. Worth its wait in gold

Untold Until Now: World War II Stories: Daddy and Other Heroes
Published in Hardcover by Nova Kroshka Books (September, 1999)
Author: Karen Brantley
Average review score:

A Wonderful Tribute!
What a wonderful tribute to true American heroes! "Untold Until Now" relates real war stories in the words of the men who lived them, blended together in the pages of a very engrossing book. The photographs included are the crowning touch. I had the honor of meeting some of the men featured in "Untold Until Now" at one of Ms.Brantley's author signings, making each story in this book even more special. Hats off to you, Karen--for putting together such a lovely tribute to these extraordinary men and allowing us to meet some of our nation's finest soldiers.

Untold Until Now
What a wonderful experience it was to read this book! I usually do not enjoy books on the war, but this book told the interesting personal experiences of each veteran interviewed. Their stories were captivating, interesting and ones you won't find in general war books. Each chapter was dedicated to a particular soldier and his personal story. At the end of each chapter was the storyteller's picture, which I found gratifying. I was able to put a face to each story being told. I would put the book down and then start craving another story. I could vividly see the picture each veteran was describing. I was amazed at how young these men were when they were defending us and our country. I will never forget these stories.

I would like to thank the author, Karen Brantley, for sharing her father's story and the other men interviewed. By reading this book, I have a better understanding of what was happening during this era. There was not just a war going on, but human beings thrust into horrendous situations, where survival was the only ticket home...home to a free and proud country.

A fresh look at people and their war stories
This book takes on a fresh look at the every day man and woman who served this country during the war. Each of the people interviewed in this book has their own story to tell and someone to listen. These people could be your neighbor, your insurance salesman, or your banker. Although most of these people have retired, most of them became an important part of the community they returned to after the war.

This book makes you realize that these were all very special people, and they will be forever famous and important because of one editor/author who thought that her daddy was special. She knew that all of the other people who served and survived were also mothers and daddys to their own children.

Another reason why I think this book is great is because the editor/author is my sister, and I am very proud of this tribute to our father, our mother, and our family.

Southern Comfort: The Garden District of New Orleans (Flora Levy Humanities Series)

Authors: S. Frederick Starr, Robert S. Brantley, and Jan White Brantley

Great Pictures
When I went to New Orleans, I only had time for a quick driving tour. This book allowed me to see what I missed, and learn more about the architecuaral styles that surround the area. The book has great info on the styles, and tells how they came to be and why. The iron work in the area is to be experienced! The charm of the homes in the Garden District are brilliantly displayed in this book.

beautiful photography
this republishing of the late 1980's version is a delicious remake made better by the new color photographs. Brantley and Brantley have out done themselves with this edition.

Zero Dark Thirty
Published in Paperback by Hellgate Press (01 September, 2002)
Author: Samuel Brantley
Average review score:

Damned good honest graphic read - highly recommended
This is a book by a Marine aviator and captain who was assigned as a forward air controller with the Marine infantry (grunts) in the jungles of Vietnam. It depicts honestly and graphically what he experienced during his 7 months as a FAC. It gives rare insight into Marine aviation and the shameful way our combat hero veterans were/are treated when they returned to the US. Semper Fi!

A candidly honest exposition into the lethal and bloody hell
Zero Dark Thirty is a military memoir of the Vietnam War, by Samuel Brantley, who was a United States Marine Corps combat aviator. The Marines required their combat aviators in Vietnam to spend time doing forward air control duty on the ground, with and along side the field troops in the front line danger zone. As a result, Brantley received a shocking awakening to the true horrors of war, and his seven months on the ground would significantly impact upon the rest of his life. Zero Dark Thirty is highly recommended for being a powerfully written, vividly presented, and candidly honest exposition into the lethal and bloody hell that was the Vietnam War.

Camille's Crossroad

Authors: Judi S. Brantley and Martha-Elizabeth Ferguson

Loved it!
I read this book to my seventh grade religious education class. They loved it. It tells the story of a 12 year old girl faced with following her faith or following her friends. After being visited by an angel and meeting all of the "people" that are helping her make the decision she is more able to make the right one. It showed the children that they do not make these decisions alone. There are many helpers working on our side.

Truly Motivating
Choices has insprired me to keep on moving and to pursue a career in motivational speaking. Before I read the book I was unsure of myself. I did not understand how to tap into my personal power. This is a really detailed book and it gives you a step by step process to making positive changes in you rlife. I have used a few of Brantley's points in my speeches so that I may keep moving on. Brantley has been helpful in giving personal advice on how to get started in a career in public speaking. She is truely an inspiration to me and others.

Digging for Answers: Has Archaeology Disproved the Bible?

Digging for Answers: Has Archaeology Disproved the Bible?
I found Digging for Answers to be an insightful and useful volume in understanding the role of archaeology in biblical studies. Dr. Brantley explains that the science of archaeology (as is true of any other science), is incapable of disproving or "proving" divine revelation. It does, however, offer fascinating cultural insights into what otherwise might be obscure or confusing texts. A must read for Christian teachers and preachers.

The Princeton Review Word Smart Junior: Build a Straight "A" Vocabulary/Grades 6-8
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (August, 1995)
Authors: Cynthia Brantley, Princeton Review, and Cynthia Johnson
Average review score:

Excellent concept, but beware
I bought this book for my third grader and the vocabulary is a good level. My child already knows many of the words but is learning new ones from this book. However, parents should be made aware that they might consider some of the content inappropriate for their children. I personally do not care to enlighten my child on the concept of the 60s hippie culture and all that that entails. Fortunately for me, I glanced ahead while reading aloud and saw the word cohabitation so I was able to avoid a discussion of shacking up. The characters also flippantly use the name of the Christian diety, as in "Oh, my ...." As I said, it is a great concept but read WITH your child if you object to the moral values discussed above.

Great for readers who like to expand their vocabulary
I am a 7th grader of a middle school, and this is what I think of this outstanding book. This book had a very interesting way of teaching... Instead of a textbook, this book was made into a chapter book with several excellent stories about adventures with three kids and a gargantuan, black cat. The stories were well put together and the advanced words fitted in perfectly. I shared my ideas with my family, and we bought more books of the same series. I think younger kids should just read the book for the stories if the words are a bit too complicated for them to remember, but I'm sure that they will enjoy it. Readers will no longer be oblivious about grammer. As a matter of fact, they might even excel in the field of grammer and writing. Anyway, to me, the words in the book were extremely easy to understand, because they were so well placed, that the context clues made the definitions very clear and obvious. There was also a glossary in the back that gave the definitions to the bold-faced words. Unfortunately, the glossary did not have definitions to all of the words, but if you have a dictionary, you should have no problem. Overall, this was a fantastic book leaving me craving for more.

My elementary school age kids love this.
I bought this tape for my elementary age niece and two nephews. They have played this tape for weeks every night at bed time. They even fight over who gets to listen to it in the car. All of their vocabulary had sky rocketed. They are using "big" words properly and have no problem correcting the adults when we use them wrong. The way the new words are weaved into the stories give the kids the handle to truly understand what the word is, and what the correct usage is for any given situation. My sister and I are so impressed with this tape. We wish there were more of these.
